City of good government

In the Meeting Room of the Town Hall of Siena (Italy) you can see an amazing set of frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti known as the Cities of Good and Bad Government. The relationship of the city to the countryside in this most impressive image relating to the allegory of “good government” is one of interaction and a reciprocal, or mutual identification through the juxtaposition of environment and a counter environment. You can see the country-side from the city, and from the fields and hills the city stands out as a powerful presence in the landscape!

But where does all the food come from? Architect Carolyn Steel discusses the daily miracle of feeding a city, and shows how ancient food routes shaped the modern world.
Food is a shared necessity -- but also a shared way of thinking, argues Carolyn Steel. Looking at food networks offers an unusual and illuminating way to explore how cities evolved.
Without a reliable food supply, even the most modern city would collapse quickly. And most people today eat food of whose provenance they are unaware.
