Internship: e-marketing of digital products

INTERNSHIP AVAILABLE (last revised 13 Dec. 2007)

e-collaboration and e-learning are getting increasingly popular. Yet users' current and potential needs are far from being met.

Eco Innovation aims to fill existing gaps between quality expectations and quality supply in two emerging markets: online collaboration platforms for research projects and educational modules for blended learning in targeted eco-technology segments.

The intern(s) will take part in collaborative actions such as:

  1. Consolidate existing strategic watch (overal trends) and competitor review.
  2. Further the e-marketing of an existing platform (actually, the one you're reading right now, based on Drupal) through product testing, description, promotion, demonstration.
  3. Help market our e-module: prospection, benchmarking, communication, etc.
  4. Revise a spin-off dossier to be submitted to investment funds.

We expect this internship to extend our existing customer base and help secure funding (small and large).
The position will normally be based in Brussels although this is negotiable. A network of specialists within Eco Innovation, Université Libre de Bruxelles, and beyond will provide support.

Mission: build eCollab demo

Help sought for short-term mission.

Context: many people could use the eCollab platform but they simply aren't aware of the many possibilities provided by the platform, and of the stakes associated with such a knowledge management approach (see http://ecollab.eco-innovation.net/why-ecollab). There is a growing need for a user-friendly, engaging and even experiential tool, going much beyond the handbook, for raising awareness of eCollab current and prospective users.

Main objective: to build a demonstration space for eCollab, highlighting the platform's main functionalities such as:

  • content creation: bookpage, forum, blog, album, picture, planet feeds...
  • editing: overview of the edit menu, import content from outside eCollab (from Word, etc), insert a link, insert a picture, basic formatting options, create a table
  • navigating: the search engine, the items in the left hand column
  • groups: creation, managing groups (known issues with alerts need attention, as they are not very reliable), audiences, etc.
  • other functionalities to be discussed based on mindmap of eCollab functions (last version to date: 21 Dec. 2007).

Secondary objective: to help inventory and prioritise the issues (ergonomy, optimalisation, user-friendliness, quality) that need attention from the platform developers.

Method for main objective:

  • use the dedicated demo site (currently being prepared by Steph) http://demo.ecollab.eco-innovation.net.
  • get familiar with the content already imported in this site (guided tour by Fred): forums, and additional existing material selected for being used for demo purposes
  • create ad hoc content for demo purposes: fictitious users, groups and content...
  • use pedagogy and creativity to design itineraries demonstrating the main functionalities. These itineraries should probably be short, focused yet consistently articulated with each other. They should be conceived with a user-friendliness perspective in order to lure the layuser and stimulate his/her curiosity.
  • combined with the demonstration aspect ('look, this is how...'), there should be a space immediately ready for allowing the layuser to perform the functionality ('now do it!'). This should be motivated by a set of individual concise objectives such as: 'create a bookpage', 'create an album', 'move this page from here to there', 'import a picture in your page...' etc.
  • the series of individual steps should be conceived as to allow a gradual, consistent disclosure of the main functionalities. Game approach recommended (i.e., fun-based, game-based, etc).

Method for secondary objective:

  • build on known issues that have already been reported, mostly in dedicated forums, and taskslists (case trackers, explanations to come). Mine the relevant forums where necessary to get an understanding of know issues and discussions around them.
  • identify an adequate repository for the new information to come: probably continue an existing forum or create a new one (to be decided).
  • discuss

Required for the mission:

  • no technical knowledge of Drupal or CMS (content management systems), but ability to become rapidly familiar with this type of online platform.
  • attention to detail and ability to spot bugs and potential areas of improvement from an ergonomy / user-friendliness / effectiveness points of view.
  • understanding of the strategic stakes of this mission in the context of eCollab and Eco Innovation development (briefing).
  • creativity, pedagogy, and interest in online collaboration approaches.
  • commitment to use excellent written English on the site.
  • computer with good internet connection.
